    Meromorphy and topology of localized solutions in the Thomas–MHD model

    The one-dimensional MHD system first introduced by J.H. Thomas [Phys. Fluids 11, 1245 (1968)] as a model of the dynamo effect is thoroughly studied in the limit of large magnetic Prandtl number. The focus is on two types of localized solutions involving shocks (antishocks) and hollow (bump) waves. Numerical simulations suggest phenomenological rules concerning their generation, stability and basin of attraction. Their topology, amplitude and thickness are compared favourably with those of the meromorphic travelling waves, which are obtained exactly, and respectively those of asymptotic descriptions involving rational or degenerate elliptic functions. The meromorphy bars the existence of certain configurations, while others are explained by assuming imaginary residues. These explanations are tested using the numerical amplitude and phase of the Fourier transforms as probes of the analyticity properties. Theoretically, the proof of the partial integrability backs up the role ascribed to meromorphy. Practically, predictions are derived for MHD plasmas

    Modelling the impact of beliefs and communication on attitude dynamics : a cognitive agent-based approach

    In the context of military training for stabilization operation of a crisis zone with civilian population, understanding the formation of attitude and its dynamics is a key issue. This paper presents a multi-agent model for simulating attitude formation and change based on individual's perception of information and its diffusion through communication. We represent the attitude as object-evaluation associations of varying strength proposed by Fazio [1]. Individuals observe military operations. They exchange and revise beliefs about social objects depending on multiple criteria deriving from social psychology theories. They compute their attitude value based on analytic assessment of these beliefs. We illustrate, through several simulation experiments, the role of communication on attitude dynamics

    Distribution of roots of random real generalized polynomials

    The average density of zeros for monic generalized polynomials, Pn(z)=ϕ(z)+k=1nckfk(z)P_n(z)=\phi(z)+\sum_{k=1}^nc_kf_k(z), with real holomorphic ϕ,fk\phi ,f_k and real Gaussian coefficients is expressed in terms of correlation functions of the values of the polynomial and its derivative. We obtain compact expressions for both the regular component (generated by the complex roots) and the singular one (real roots) of the average density of roots. The density of the regular component goes to zero in the vicinity of the real axis like Imz|\hbox{\rm Im}\,z|. We present the low and high disorder asymptotic behaviors. Then we particularize to the large nn limit of the average density of complex roots of monic algebraic polynomials of the form Pn(z)=zn+k=1nckznkP_n(z) = z^n +\sum_{k=1}^{n}c_kz^{n-k} with real independent, identically distributed Gaussian coefficients having zero mean and dispersion δ=1nλ\delta = \frac 1{\sqrt{n\lambda}}. The average density tends to a simple, {\em universal} function of ξ=2nlogz\xi={2n}{\log |z|} and λ\lambda in the domain ξcothξ2nsinarg(z)\xi\coth \frac{\xi}{2}\ll n|\sin \arg (z)| where nearly all the roots are located for large nn.Comment: 17 pages, Revtex.     Interaction with the Phosphotyrosine Binding Domain/Phosphotyrosine Interacting Domain of SHC Is Required for the Transforming Activity of the FLT4/VEGFR3 Receptor Tyrosine Kinase

    The FLT4 gene encodes two isoforms of a tyrosine kinase receptor, which belongs to the family of receptors for vascular endothelial growth factor. As the result of an alternative processing of primary mRNA transcripts, the long isoform differs from the short isoform by an additional stretch of 65 amino acid residues located at the C terminus and containing three tyrosine residues, Tyr1333, Tyr1337, and Tyr1363. Only the long isoform is endowed with a transforming capacity in fibroblasts. We show that this activity is related to the capacity of the tyrosine 1337-containing sequence to interact with the phosphotyrosine binding domain of the SHC protein. This demonstrates that a functional property of this newly described domain includes relay of mitogenic signals. In addition, it shows that the same receptor can mediate different functions through the optional binding of the phosphotyrosine binding domain and that the alternative use of this domain is sufficient to direct the signal toward different pathways

    The Association between 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Hemoglobin A1c Levels in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Stage 1–5 Chronic Kidney Disease

    Aim. To examine the relationship between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and blood hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in diabetic patients at various stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods. We screened for data collected between 2003 and 2012. The correlation between 25(OH)D and HbA1c levels was studied in patients categorized according to the severity of CKD and their vitamin D status. A multivariate linear regression model was used to determine whether 25(OH)D and HbA1c levels were independently associated after adjustment for a number of covariates (including erythrocyte metformin levels). Results. We identified 542 reports from 245 patients. The mean HbA1c value was 6.7±1.0% in vitamin D sufficiency, 7.3±1.5% in insufficiency, and 8.4±2.0% in deficiency (P<0.0001). There was a negative correlation between 25(OH)D and HbA1c levels for the population as a whole (r=-0.387, P<0.0001) and in the CKD severity subgroups (r=-0.384, P<0.0001 and r=-0.333, P<0.0001 for CKD stages 1–3 and 4-5, resp.). In the multivariate analysis, the 25(OH)D level was the only factor associated with HbA1c (P<0.0001). Conclusion. 25(OH)D levels were negatively correlated with HbA1c levels independently of study covariates

    A supramolecular assembly formed by influenza A virus genomic RNA segments

    The influenza A virus genome consists of eight viral RNAs (vRNAs) that form viral ribonucleoproteins (vRNPs). Even though evidence supporting segment-specific packaging of vRNAs is accumulating, the mechanism ensuring selective packaging of one copy of each vRNA into the viral particles remains largely unknown. We used electron tomography to show that the eight vRNPs emerge from a common ‘transition zone’ located underneath the matrix layer at the budding tip of the virions, where they appear to be interconnected and often form a star-like structure. This zone appears as a platform in 3D surface rendering and is thick enough to contain all known packaging signals. In vitro, all vRNA segments are involved in a single network of intermolecular interactions. The regions involved in the strongest interactions were identified and correspond to known packaging signals. A limited set of nucleotides in the 5′ region of vRNA 7 was shown to interact with vRNA 6 and to be crucial for packaging of the former vRNA. Collectively, our findings support a model in which the eight genomic RNA segments are selected and packaged as an organized supramolecular complex held together by direct base pairing of the packaging signals

    Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis complicating Legionnaires' disease: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Legionnaires' disease is recognized as a multi-systemic illness. Afflicted patients may have pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system complications. However, renal insufficiency is uncommon. The spectrum of renal involvement may range from a mild and transient elevation of serum creatinine levels to anuric renal failure requiring dialysis and may be linked to several causes. In our present case report, we would like to draw attention to the importance of the pathological documentation of acute renal failure by reporting a case of a patient with acute tubulointerstitial nephritis complicating Legionnaires' disease.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 55-year-old Caucasian man was admitted to our hospital for community-acquired pneumonia complicated by acute renal failure. <it>Legionella pneumophila </it>serogroup type 1 was diagnosed. Although the patient's respiratory illness responded to intravenous erythromycin and ofloxacin therapy, his renal failure worsened, he became anuric, and hemodialysis was started. A renal biopsy was performed, which revealed severe tubulointerstitial nephritis. After initiation of steroid therapy, his renal function improved dramatically.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This case highlights the importance of kidney biopsies in cases where acute renal failure is a complicating factor in Legionnaires' disease. If the presence of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis can be confirmed, it will likely respond favorably to steroidal treatment and thus irreversible renal damage and chronic renal failure will be avoided.</p
